How Sensory Activities Support Emotional Regulation

Many children, especially those with autism or sensory processing difficulties, experience the world in ways that can easily lead to overwhelm. Emotional regulation — the ability to calm down, focus, or transition smoothly — often requires more than words. That’s where sensory activities come in.

At SunDrama Education, we integrate sensory strategies into every session to support emotional stability and build resilience.

What are sensory activities?

Sensory activities engage one or more of the body’s senses (touch, sight, sound, smell, taste, movement). Common examples include:

  • Playing with water or kinetic sand
  • Squeezing playdough or therapy putty
  • Swinging, bouncing on a yoga ball, or rolling
  • Listening to calming sounds or white noise
  • Smelling familiar or preferred scents (lavender, citrus)

These activities help children reset, refocus, and feel safe in their environment.

Why are they important?

Sensory-based strategies can:

  • Reduce anxiety and frustration
  • Improve attention and focus
  • Build self-awareness
  • Support transitions and routines
  • Provide safe ways to release energy

Sensory Support at SunDrama

Each child we work with has a unique sensory profile. We use:

  • Sensory bins and fidget tools
  • Movement breaks with yoga balls or resistance bands
  • Sensory-friendly art (e.g. finger painting, foam play)
  • Calming spaces with low light and quiet corners

We also guide parents and carers on how to support sensory needs at home.
